Για την απονομή των μεγαλύτερων βραβείων της μουσικής αρμόδια είναι η «Εθνική Ακαδημία Τεχνών και Επιστημών Ηχογράφησης (Νational Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences)» των ΗΠΑ.
Η Adele ήταν η μεγάλη νικήτρια με πέντε βραβεία, δηλώνοντας όταν κέρδισε το Grammy για το Καλύτερο Άλμπουμ της χρονιάς: «Δεν μπορώ να δεχτώ αυτό το βραβείο, η Beyonce το αξίζει περισσότερο».
H εγκυμονούσα Βeyonce, ήταν υποψήφια για εννέα Grammy με το άλμπουμ "Lemonade", κερδίζοντας τελικά δύο.
Ο David Bowie κέρδισε μετά θάνατον τέσσερα βραβεία για το τελευταίο του άλμπουμ "Blackstar".
Τα Grammy παρέλαβε εκ μέρους του ο Ντόνι Μακάσλιν, μέλος του συγκροτήματός του, ο οποίος χαιρέτισε τον David Bowie ως «καλλιτεχνική ιδιοφυΐα και τύπο με απίστευτο χιούμορ».
Φυσικά τιμήθηκαν και οι άλλοι δυο καλλιτέχνες που έφυγαν το 2016 από την ζωή, ο Prince και ο George Michael, με την Adele να ερμηνεύει συγκινημένη τραγούδια αφιερωμένα στον τραγουδιστή του «Freedom», ενώ ο Brunno Mars με την μπάντα του τραγούδησαν ντυμένοι με φανερά εμπνευσμένη από τον Prince!
